Seiko Watch has announced the release of three regular models from the new Seiko 5 Sports SNXS Series on April 4th. These models are set to be available on May 10th.
The Seiko 5 Sports brand, which has been cherished as an entry-level timepiece for a long time, was rebranded in 2019 and has since been divided into two main series: the SKX series, which follows in the footsteps of the iconic divers, and the Field series, which focuses on field watches.
Joining as the third series is the SNXS series, which, like the SKX series, derives its name from the model numbers of past masterpieces. Defined as a series that evolves the quality of heritage design with the concept of a "Everyday Carry"- a companion to carry with you daily, it incorporates features such as the streamlined case shape with a bulging center, known as the "hebitama" or "snake eye," and the crown positioned at 4 o'clock for unobstructed comfort.
While maintaining these characteristics, the SNXS series has made enhancements to ensure a better fit on the wrist, such as dropping the lug position to align with the arm. Additionally, it features a case finish that combines hairline and mirror polishing, as well as a newly developed three-dimensional metal bracelet with a focus on shading, all of which enhance the classic impression while elevating the overall quality.
This new Seiko 5 Sports series is based on the iconic SNXS model, a long-time fan favorite. The design concept is "Everyday Carry" - a watch meant to be a daily companion. It retains the compact size and distinctive case shape of the original SNXS, which was nicknamed the "snake's eye". The 4 o'clock crown position is also preserved, maintaining the clean lines. However, the new models have undergone various improvements and evolutions compared to the original.
The three models announced as regular editions are the "SBSA253" with a navy dial, the "SBSA255" with a black dial, and the "SBSA257" with an ivory dial. All three models have lumibrite applied to the bar indices and use an orange second hand, which was frequently used in Seiko 5 Sports watches from the 1970s.
The case and bracelet are made of stainless steel, and the glass is curved hard rex. The watches are water-resistant up to 10 atmospheres. The case size is 37.4mm, with a thickness of 12.5mm.
Seiko has been aiming to control the pricing and distribution of the Seiko 5 Sports models more effectively, moving them towards an upmarket positioning.
The new Seiko 5 Sports watches are designed and built with premium materials, embodying a "youthful dynamism" while still staying true to the core values of the original 1968 Seiko 5 Sports. This suggests an effort to appeal to a younger and more style-conscious demographic.
With these developments, the Seiko 5 Sports brand is moving towards a more upmarket and premium positioning.
